    About Emmonak Corporation

    Born of the land.
    Built for the long generations.

An Alaska Native Corporation organized under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, owned by and accountable to the Yup'ik people of Emmonak.

    The history · ANCSA 1971

    A settlement, and a beginning

On December 18, 1971, the United States Congress passed the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. In the language of statute it resolved aboriginal land claims; in the lives of our people it created something that had never existed before — a corporation owned by Yup'ik shareholders, holding title to the land beneath their own feet.

Emmonak Corporation was incorporated as a village corporation under that Act. Our roughly 478 original shareholders were the people of Emmonak: families who had fished these waters and hunted this delta for thousands of years. The corporation became the legal vessel for that inheritance — 183,674 surface acres and roughly 400 acres held in fee, in the heart of the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge.

Fifty years on, we remain what we were created to be: a Native-owned enterprise answerable to its shareholders, operating real businesses in one of the most remote regions of North America — 490 miles from Anchorage, where the river meets the Bering Sea.

    The community of Emmonak

    97% Yup'ik. 100% home.

Emmonak sits where the Kwikluak Pass of the Yukon River reaches the Bering Sea. Our community lives a subsistence lifestyle built around the salmon run, the seasons, and one another. The corporation exists to serve that community — not to replace it.

Our place in the ANCSA structure

    A village corporation in the
    Calista Region.

ANCSA created two levels of corporations: twelve regional corporations and more than 200 village corporations. Emmonak Corporation is the village corporation for the people of Emmonak, organized under the regional corporation that holds the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta — Calista Corporation.

The Yukon-Kuskokwim Region — also known as the Calista Region — is the ancestral home of our shareholders and the people we serve. Most of our shareholders still live in the region. No roads, rail, or utility infrastructure connect our communities to the rest of Alaska. The river, the runway, and the barge are our lifelines, and the way the regional and village corporations work together is part of what keeps those lifelines running.

Emmonak Corporation operates as one of dozens of village corporations whose lands, shareholders, and economic futures intersect with the regional corporation’s. We honor that relationship. Our wholly-owned holding company, Emmonak Taluyaq, LLC, carries the operating subsidiaries — Qiilituliq, LLC (Tank Farm) and Field Calibrations, Inc. — so the Corporation can generate revenue and capacity at the village level and our shareholders see the benefit of ANCSA close to home.

Calista’s published 2025–2029 strategic goals include promoting in-region economic development and partnerships, and growing shareholder benefits, employment, and education across the region. Emmonak Corporation’s village-level work — fuel infrastructure, retail, federal procurement through FCI, asset rentals, and shareholder services — is aligned with that regional direction.
